9 months

My beautiful Papa.

9 months ago tonight, I kissed Papa Bud goodbye. 9 months ago tomorrow, he left our world for a better one.

I will never forget his last evening.

He had been resting comfortably thanks to the powerful pain medications the staff of Hospice arranged for him.

His breathing had become labored and he had the "death rattle" breathing sound you hear about as a person is nearing the end of their life. I have to say it is the worst sound I have ever heard. I am comforted knowing he didn't feel any of the pain associated with dying. That sound haunts me.

As I sat by his bedside that last evening of his life, it dawned on me that death isn't easy for everyone.

In a way, its almost like child labor. But instead of having a new life to show for the hard work a mom puts in, when you labor in death, your reward is eternal rest.

9 months ago tonight I kissed him goodbye. I knew he didn't have long. As I walked out of his hospital room, I turned to take one last look at him. Even as he labored to die, he was still so handsome to me.

Tomorrow marks 9 months since he drew his last breath, since he suffered last. 9 months since a part of my heart left with him. I miss him and was so grateful to spend his last evening by his bed side.

Our Easter trip home to WV

During Easter we made a quick trip home for three days WV to see John's side of the family.

My sister in law had a photographer come by MawMaw & PawPaw's house to take a family portrait. This is no easy task considering my husband is the youngest of five children.

We had over 20 people to pose!

It was totally worth the trouble. Pawpaw isn't responding well to his second round of chemo. This could be the last family portrait. It was bittersweet but something we will all treasure.

Easter was a day full of family fun. Church services followed by a huge family brunch at the Embassy Suites in Charleston. Being part of a huge family is never boring! MawMaw & PawPaw's house sits on over 5 acres of lush green land so you are able to sit outside and enjoy every minute of being there on the front porch watching all the grandkids.

While in WV we also took the time to tour the state capital which is stunning in early spring. The tulips were spectacular and the kids enjoyed the free cultural center. I loved looking at the antiques that were on display.

We visited the coal miner exhibit literally hours before the tragic mine explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine one hour south of Charleston.

Back at MawMaw & Pawpa's house, the kids played outside. With over 10 grandkids, a basketball or baseball game is never out of the question.

PawPaw wasn't feeling very well. His chemo has left him very tired and weak but he loved sitting in his recliner with the screen door open watching all of his grandbabies laugh and play.

It reminded me so much of Papa Bud and how he used to sit by his window so he could watch the kids play outside. We are still praying for a miracle that PawPaw's cancer will be cured.

When I Thought Baby Bean was a Boy

I don't know why I was so convinced Baby Bean was going to be a boy.

I think I wanted to name Bean after Papa so much that I had just brainwashed myself into believing she was a he.

I was even buying things for Bean that a baby girl clearly could not use or wear!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the vintage layette. I will probably hold onto the items and hope that a dear friend has a boy.

In the meanwhile, it was really hard thinking of a little girls name.

I went online to a few very posh baby announcement web sites for some ideas and I think I found a keeper:

Karsen Rylee is almost 23 weeks along in my tummy. Last week at my Dr. appt she measured 24 weeks.

I think its a good name. But I will probably call her Bean until we are formally introduced.

Missing Him

Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality. ~Emily Dickinson

Not a day goes by without me thinking of him.

Its almost been 9 months since we said our tearful goodbye. His death has been very hard to adjust to. Some days I can think of him and smile and even laugh. But more often when I think of Papa, I just cry from missing him so much.

It helps having such a big, wonderful and loving family. But no one takes his place.

My mom told me some good advice a few weeks ago.

She said I need to love others as much as I loved him. And I will try but there is no one else like him.

Of course, I love my children above all others. But as a child myself, there was no one like Papa Bud. We just had a special bond. I felt totally loved and accepted and protected by him and thats all a child really wants to feel. He made me & my sister feel totally safe and loved.

As a grandfather, he didn't have to love me the way he did. He treated me and Raini as if we were his daughters. He was my protector and while my mom worked, him & Mama Jo were our caregivers. There is no one else in my life who treated me as wonderful as he did. Losing that security, even as a 35 year old woman, has been really hard. Much harder than I imagined. And for years as his health declined, I did try to imagine a time when we would part and prepare myself for his loss.

As the weather gets warmer, I miss him even more. He loved warm days. He loved his garden. He loved fishing. Anything that he could do outside was where he wanted to be. Some days he would just sit on his front porch and let the sun warm his belly.

I miss his detailed mind. Last night I watched the HISTORY channel show, "The Story of Us" and I just knew he would have enjoyed that. And if he were still here, thats what we would have talked about today. He probably would have had to record it because the show comes on at 9 and that was well past his bed time. Still, he would have loved the history.

Last spring I finally got around to reading the novel by David McCullough, 1776 and Papa and I had so many wonderful talks about history and the history of the American Revolution. He knew a little about everything but he had a gift for never coming across as being as smart as he truly was.

For a man who had to leave school in the 8th grade, Papa was very smart and he loved learning.

Every life, at some point, ends. That's the easy part. You know this. But when it happens and you lose the one life you cherished so much, your mind has a funny way of not accepting what you know to be.

I know he is dead. He isn't coming back. On this earth, on this side of life I will never see him again. He awaits me in a much better place that I pray someday I will go.

The hard part is waking up each day and accepting the sad news over again.

Baby Bean Vintage loves!

Ok, I'm slowly adjusting to the fact that Baby Bean is a SHE.

It gets easier to accept when I find CUTE, VINTAGE girly outfits like these:

Imagine my delight when I discovered Belle Heir, a company that was created out of a love of fine vintage and in appreciation of the care, quality and attention to detail that once went into the construction of clothing.

The prices for these heirloom quality items are so reasonable!

I cannot wait to find Baby Bean a vintage outfit to wear home from the hospital!

Shock & Awe

Monday was my 20 week sonogram. I had to reschedule it a week out due to our trip back home over the Easter holiday.

While in NC, Raini and I went thrifting. I found the most INCREDIBLE vintage baby boy layette. We also found the cutest baby boy onesies. Everything was .99 or less so I had to buy it all.

I was so convinced Baby Bean was a boy. I even had his name picked out. Harrison Gentry Hanson and we would call him "Beau"

So imagine my surprise when the nice ultrasound lady told me we were having a GIRL.

Shock & Awe indeed.

First and foremost, my baby is healthy. So gender isn't a HUGE deal. I am blessed enough just to be able to be a mommy again.

But a girl!?!?! Oh my poor Ashton is going to have a hard time with that.

I feel dumb buying all those baby boy things. I should have waited!

So its back to the name drawing board.......

I am going to have a little girl! Yes, I am shocked but I know once I hold that precious pink bundle I will be in complete Awe!

Sweet Home North Carolina

Vintage Bunny Family

Me and the kids are enjoying our spring break in NC.

After an all too quick four fun days spent in West Virginia, we made our way back to North Carolina to spend the rest of the week with our family in NC.

It feels so good to be home. The familiarity of my hometown is always comforting.

Visiting with my Mama Jo, shopping with Raini and being at my mom's house is the RX we all needed after a long cold winter.

Family is good for the soul.

In Baby Bean news, we are officially halfway thru the pregnancy! 20 weeks today and next Tuesday is our sonogram! Thank you for your prayers and many well wishes!
